Do Splash Do Waterholes

Swimming, Bitter Springs, Mataranka, Elsey National Park, Katherine, Northern Territory, Australia

Splash into the Northern Territory, where warm days and an abundance of water make swimming a must on any visit.

Sure, crocodiles and jellyfish mean you can't swim everywhere, but swimming in the Territory is definitely a case of quality over quantity.

Where else can you glide through a clear waterhole, high in an ancient escarpment, while looking down over a beautiful Kakadu landscape below. Or feel the knots in your shoulders unkink under a thundering waterfall in Litchfield National Park.

Five patrolled beaches offer dry-season swimming in the Top End, and there are public swimming pools from the capital to regional centres all over the Territory.

Ride the swell at the Wave Pool at Darwin's Waterfront Precinct, do a few laps of Lake Alexander at pretty East Point Reserve then share a pool with a crocodile in the Cage of Death at Crocosaurus Cove.

Further south, swim through Katherine's sandstone gorges at Nitmiluk National Park, bushwalk to its amazing natural waterholes and waterfalls or soak in one of the four natural hot springs the region's known for.

The desert country around Alice Springs is also surprisingly good for a dip. Tour the West MacDonnell Ranges and stop for a swim in Glen Helen Gorge, Ellery Creek Big Hole, Ormiston Gorge or Redbank Gorge.

When it comes to swimming in the Territory, the rules are simple: stick to the dry season for beach swimming, obey all crocodile and jellyfish warning signs, and if you're unsure if a waterway is safe, don't get in the water.
