Kakadu National Park and remote Arnhem Land contain enough beauty and diversity to keep you going for a long, long time. Pitch a tent, walk a trail, cruise the rivers alongside giant crocodiles or watch the whole spectacle from 500 feet in the air – the choice is yours.
Camp by a billabong
Camping in a World Heritage listed national park is a good idea. Rise with the sun and step into a land of cascading waterfalls, sandstone gorges, ancient Aboriginal rock art and abundant wildlife. The popular Muirella campsite sits at the edge of the Djarradjin billabong and the Bubba Wetlands, giving you access to great walking and birdwatching opportunities.
Cruising with crocs
Explore the spectacular East Alligator River that borders the remote wilderness of Arnhem Land. Take a boat trip alongside the Territory's famous saltwater crocodiles and learn from Aboriginal guides about the importance of the river system to the indigenous way of life.
Walk and ye shall find
Walk through one of Kakadu's best-known wetlands as it comes alive with thousands of migratory magpie geese (a Bininj delicacy). The Mamukala wetlands host a three-kilometre walk taking in woodlands, floodplains and a wide range of native flora and fauna. Use one of the areas many bird hides and spot a white-browed robin.
Use dry season access to experience the majestic scenery of Twin Falls Plateau on a challenging six-kilometre walk. Reward yourself with an afternoon swim in the cool pools beneath the falls while you plan your next adventure.
Aerial manoeuvres
The wet season monsoonal rains create an explosion of colour and wildlife on the floodplains. With many of Kakadu's tracks rendered inaccessible, it is a great time to board a scenic flight and witness the magic of this World Heritage-listed wilderness from high above.
