A natural wonderland
Kakadu National Park is a timeless place. Contemporary visitors experience pristine landscapes that have changed little over thousands of years, and an ancient Aboriginal culture that dates back more than 50,000 years.
The Park is home to over 1,700 plant species, a quarter of all Australian freshwater fish species and over one third of Australian bird species. In fact Kakadu was also voted number one bird-watching destination by Australian Geographic.
For all this Kakadu has been listed as a World Heritage site for its cultural and natural values.
Darwin to Kakadu by road
Following the Nature's Way tourism drive is a great way to explore Kakadu. It connects Darwin with the township of Jabiru via the Arnhem Highway, then continues south to Pine Creek. Drive this road and you will pass most of the park's major sites including Mamukala Wetlands, the Bowali Visitor Centre, the town of Jabiru, Nourlangie Rock, Jim Jim and Twin Falls, Cooinda and Gunlom.
Outdoor adventures
See Kakadu on foot via its network of bushwalking trails. Choose from easy strolls, day walks and challenging treks that traverse rugged escarpments, lush wetlands, plunging gorges, cascading waterfalls and Aboriginal art sites. Kakadu is also home to rugged four-wheel drive tracks and river crossings for more experienced drivers looking for off-road discoveries.
Spend the night
There are a wide range of accommodation options in the park. Pitch a tent or park your van in one of the established camping areas close to some of the park's main attractions, or book into a hotel or resort. For something different, why not try a safari camp that includes an authentic cultural experience hosted by the park's traditional owners?
