Tennant Creek features wet and dry seasons due to its tropical location, but as it's surrounded by a large land mass the amount of rainfall during the wet season is limited. Most rain falls from December through to February and can include heavy falls resulting from northern cyclones and hot low pressure systems.

The cool season and best time to visit is from May through to August. During these months the maximum temperature averages sit below 30°C. December is the hottest month when average maximum temperatures can reach is 37°C.
