Seventeen Mile Falls, Jatbula Trail, Nitmiluk National Park, Katherine, Northern Territory, Australia

Keen bushwalker? Intrepid explorer? Like to wander and see the wildlife? This is bushwalking paradise. No matter your fitness, time or interests, there's the perfect walk waiting for you in Katherine.

Ample opportunity

Six national parks share the region with more than 10 nature parks, reserves and conservation areas. More than 100km of walking trails wind through Nitmuluk National Park alone. Choose from a range of short walks, starting from just 40 minutes through to full-day hikes, or pack up your backpack and head out overnight. The multi-day Jatbula Trail, which heads out for four to five days through Nitmuluk National Park, is famous for a reason and a must-do for any avid hiker.

Experience the Outback

Walking and hiking through Katherine Gorge and the surrounding areas will bring you in close quarters with native wildlife and the unique Northern Territory landscape. Spot a cockatoo or trace a wallaby's path along your trail. Camp, swim and fish on longer walks, or settle in by the river or a water hole for a picnic lunch. Explore Aboriginal rock art, stunning waterfalls and astounding rock formations. Hike across varied and dramatic land, and prepare to be wowed by vastness and diversity at every turn.

Plan ahead

Pick up topographical maps, brochures and walking information for short and overnight walks at the visitor centre in the Nitmuluk National Park. Overnight walkers should register here. Shorter walks are good for most levels of fitness, while the longer walks, especially the Jatbula Trail, require a good level of fitness and endurance.

Pick your time

The sun in the outback can be fierce, and the rainy season causes rivers to rise dangerously. Walks are best completed from May to September during the cooler, drier months. Remember to take enough drinking water. Wear sturdy shoes, take a hat, and slop on plenty of sunscreen.
