This incredible train journey cuts through the heart of Australia, running south to north right through the Red Centre. Undoubtedly one of Australia's most famous train journeys, the trip lasts two nights and three days, passing through ever-changing landscapes from Adelaide, through Alice Springs and Tennant Creek, and on to Darwin.

Bit on the side

Make the most of your journey and disembark for sightseeing tours along the way. Explore to the Red Centre taking in Alice Springs and the iconic Uluru, then head on to see the stunning Katherine gorge, en route to the lush tropics and wetlands of the Top End.

All the way

When the original Ghan railway was completed in 1929 it only ran as far north as Alice Springs, yet was always conceived as extending to the length to Darwin. This was made a reality in 2004 and now the 54-hour journey from Adelaide to Darwin is regarded as one of the world's great train journeys.
