Mitchell Street, Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia

Travelling around the Northern Territory by car gives you freedom, flexibility, and with the right vehicle, access all areas. Not only is the roadtrip a right of passage, it's the best way to get off the beaten track and explore the Territory's remote wilderness, at your own pace. It's not all off-road ruggedness, though: 95% of the Northern Territory's attractions are accessible by sealed highways, so there's plenty to explore in a regular car or campervan, as well as in all-terrain 4WDs. Hire companies operate across the Northern Territory, so if you fly in to Alice Springs or Darwin it's easy to arrange to collect a vehicle at the airport and hit the road.

Road rules and road safety

Make sure your vehicle in is good working order and familiarise yourself with local road rules and safety before you set off. Try to avoid driving at night, and be wary of road trains and crossing stock on highways. In Australia, vehicles travel on the left-hand side of the road, seatbelts are compulsory, and speed limits apply to all roads. Distances in the Northern Territory are vast, so plan ahead for rest stops.
