Contemporary and Aboriginal art galleries can be found throughout the Northern Territory. You will find large commercial spaces, community-run galleries, Government operated exhibition spaces and Aboriginal art collections.
One of the most scenic galleries in Australia is The Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory overlooking beautiful Fannie Bay and Darwin Harbour. This gallery is home to Aboriginal art and culture, Southeast Asian art, Territory history – such as the Cyclone Tracey exhibition – and maritime history.
Darwin's suburbs and city central are home to a host of interesting art spaces representing local and interstate artists. You can also find plenty of local artists and their wares at the weekly markets including Mindil Beach and Parap.
Katherine and Barkly Region
The towns of Katherine and Tennant Creek are both home to a number of small art galleries. Most contain collections of Aboriginal Art from local communities and represent a variety of mediums.
Central Australia is the birthplace of the contemporary Aboriginal art movement and as a result there are many Aboriginal art galleries displaying the works of local artists from surrounding communities.
Further to this, you will find a rich, innovative and culturally diverse art movement of non-indigenous local artists in town from photographers to painters, sculptors and craft practitioners working with mediums such as silk and wool. The Araluen Cultural Precinct provides a fascinating glimpse into the art, culture and heritage of the region.
There are two art centres located at Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. Maruka Arts represents 18 communities and 800 local crafts people with a warehouse of more than 30,000 art works. Its craft and retail outlet is based at the Uluru-Kata Tjuta Cultural Centre. The Walkatjara Art Centre, also at the cultural centre is owned and operated by artists from the local Mutitjulu Community.
